Biltong Premium Biltong Piri Piri — the same air-dried beef, with the chilli turned on
Biltong Premium Biltong Piri Piri is South African beef biltong with chilli and paprika worked into the spice mix. It is the same slow air-dried, vinegar-cured beef as the Original, just wearing a hotter jacket: high in protein, low in sugar, and hot enough to make you notice without wiping out the meat underneath. Sold as a single 25 g bag or as a case.
Why this one
- Heat that stays in its lane: the chilli arrives first, then steps aside so you can still taste air-dried beef rather than a chilli hit with meat attached.
- Paprika does the colour and the depth: it rounds the burn off into something smoky-sweet instead of a flat sting.
- High in protein, low in sugar: dried beef with a spiced crust, and no sweet glaze anywhere near it.
How Biltong Premium makes it
Biltong Premium follows the South African playbook for all four of its bags: cure the beef with apple vinegar, season it, then hang it in moving air until it has dried down. For the Piri Piri, chilli and paprika go into a spice mix that already leans on coriander, so the heat is built into the crust rather than sprayed on afterwards.
Taste and texture: a slow prickle that builds across three or four slices rather than a single slap, with the coriander base and the sour edge of the cure still clearly there behind it. The slices are as soft and pliable as the Original — the difference is entirely in the seasoning, not the chew.
When to reach for it
Beer food, mostly. Piri Piri biltong and a cold lager is a partnership with a long history and no known downside. It is also the right thing to have on the table during a long card game, and the bag to hand to the friend who carries their own hot sauce to restaurants.
Frequently asked
- How hot is it, honestly? Warm rather than punishing. Most people who enjoy a hot curry will find it comfortable; it builds as you keep eating rather than hitting hard on the first slice.
- Is the beef the same as the Original? Yes — same air-dried biltong, same vinegar cure. The chilli and paprika are the only difference you will taste.
- Is this the spiciest thing Biltong Premium makes? No. That title belongs to the Droëwors Piri Piri, which pushes the heat further.
