Chokay Bio Snackbar Heavenly Hazel is an organic dark chocolate snackbar with crunchy hazelnuts, made without added sugars and without sweeteners. It is vegan, fair trade certified and wrapped in paper, and at 30 g it sits at the grown-up end of the Chokay snackbar range rather than in the lunchbox.
Why this one
- The nuts are structural: hazelnuts go in heavily enough to carry the bar, so there is crunch in every bite rather than the occasional lucky one.
- Nothing sweet added: no added sugars and no sweeteners at all, with chicory fibre giving the chocolate its body.
- Organic, vegan and fair trade: every ingredient is from organic origin, and the bar is wrapped in paper instead of plastic.
Who makes it
Chokay is a Dutch chocolate maker based in Breda, in the Netherlands. Heavenly Hazel is the darkest of the 30 g snackbars, which is why it holds up against strong coffee where a milk bar would simply vanish.
Taste: deep cocoa opens it, roasted hazelnut runs through the middle, and the finish is long and dry without ever turning cloying.
Texture: a clean snap, then hazelnut fragments breaking up the melt.
When to reach for it
It is a single-serving bar, small enough to live permanently in a desk drawer, a rucksack or a glovebox and be forgotten about until it is needed. Good after lunch, better against a black coffee, and very good at four in the afternoon when the alternative is the vending machine.
