KoRo Banana Stripes 250g — bananas cut the long way, dried to a proper chew
KoRo Banana Stripes are dried banana from Ecuador, sliced lengthways into long strips instead of the usual coins, in a 250 g bag. Bananas and nothing else went into it. The lengthways cut is the entire trick: a longer, thicker piece dries into a dense, bendy strip rather than a brittle chip, so these eat like a toffee and not like a crisp.
Why this one
- Cut into stripes: more fruit per piece means more chew, which is the difference between a snack and a mouthful of banana-flavoured dust.
- Dark on purpose: nothing is added to hold the colour, so they go deep brown as they dry. Pale yellow banana chips have usually had help.
- Grown in Ecuador: a country that has been exporting bananas for roughly as long as anyone has been shipping fruit anywhere.
- No added sugar: a banana concentrates itself as the water leaves. There is no reason to gild it.
How KoRo makes it
KoRo Handels GmbH sells from Berlin in deliberately large formats, with less packaging per gram and ingredient lists that rarely run past the first line. These stripes are dried banana, full stop — no oil, no coating, no sweetening.
Taste and texture: honeyed and slightly caramelised, with the faint winey depth a very ripe banana gets. The chew is soft and dense, nearer to a Medjool date than to anything crunchy, and it stays sticky enough that one stripe tends to lead to the next.
When to reach for it
This is cycling and gym-bag food. A stripe fits in a jersey pocket, does not melt, and gives you something sweet to chew halfway up a climb. At home it belongs in banana bread, flapjacks or a bowl of overnight oats, where it softens overnight into something close to jam.
Frequently asked
- Why are they brown rather than yellow? Because nothing was added to stop it. Drying darkens banana naturally, and the colour is a sign there is no coating on them.
- Are these the same as banana chips? No. Banana chips are usually thin, fried and crisp. These are thicker, dried and chewy, which is a completely different eating experience.
- How do I keep them soft once opened? Reseal the bag or move them to an airtight jar. Left open in a dry kitchen they harden over a week or so.
