Grizzly Foods Beef Jerky Garden Greens — the herb garden one

Grizzly Foods Beef Jerky Garden Greens is German beef marinated with garden herbs, dried firm and finished over beechwood smoke. It is the most aromatic bag in the Grizzly range and the only one that smells of a kitchen rather than a smokehouse when you open it.

Why this one

  • Herbs lead: rosemary and thyme do the talking, with the beef answering from underneath.
  • Savoury the whole way: no sweetness, no glaze, no sticky finish.
  • Nothing artificial: Grizzly Foods skips the flavour enhancers, colourings and preservatives.
  • A proper protein snack: high in protein, and filling rather than nibbly.

How Grizzly Foods makes it

Grizzly Foods builds the marinade around green garden herbs instead of chilli or pepper, then dries the strips firm and finishes them over beechwood. The smoke is kept light on purpose: a heavier hand would flatten the herbs, and the herbs are the reason this bag exists. German beef, natural spice mixes, and nothing going on behind the curtain.

Taste and texture: green and resinous on the nose, then savoury and almost roast-dinner-like in the mouth, with the herbs sitting on top of the beef rather than smothering it. The chew is firm and dry, so the aroma keeps releasing while you work through a piece. Against the rest of the range it is the outlier — where Cracked Pepper is sharp and Burn Baby Burn is fiery, this one is fragrant.

Who it is for

People who have eaten their way through the pepper-and-chilli end of the jerky shelf and would like something that tastes of plants as well as meat. It goes down well beside a cold beer in a garden, and it is the bag to bring when the walk includes a bench and half an hour of sitting on it.

Frequently asked

  • Does it taste of herbs or of beef? Both, in that order on the nose and the other way round in the mouth. The beef is never buried.
  • Is there any heat in it? None to speak of. This is the aromatic bag, not the spicy one.
  • How should an opened bag be kept? Sealed, somewhere cool and dry, and eaten within a few days. No fridge needed before you open it.
