Grizzly Foods Beef Jerky Teriyaki — savoury-sweet, and not from sugar

Grizzly Foods Beef Jerky Teriyaki is German beef in a brewed Japanese-style marinade, dried firm and finished over beechwood smoke. It is the sweet end of the Grizzly beef range, and it gets there without sugar.

Why this one

  • Teriyaki character, no sugar: the sweetening is done with erythritol, which is why it reads as teriyaki without a spoonful of sugar behind it.
  • Not sticky: sweet on the palate, dry in the hand, and nothing glazing your fingers.
  • Ginger and lemongrass behind it: the marinade has an aromatic backbone rather than one sweet note.
  • High in protein: it tastes like a treat and behaves like a meat snack.

How Grizzly Foods makes it

A traditional brewed marinade in the Japanese style goes over German beef, lifted with ginger and lemongrass, with erythritol standing in for sugar. The strips are then dried firm and finished over beechwood, which adds a faint smokiness you would never get from a teriyaki glaze in a pan. No flavour enhancers, colourings or preservatives are involved.

Taste and texture: savoury first, then that familiar lacquered sweetness, then a warm aromatic finish from the ginger. It is noticeably sweeter than Original or Lemon Ginger and nowhere near the sugary stickiness of the British-style jerkies — think soy-sauce depth with a sweet edge rather than candy. The chew is firm and clean.

When to reach for it

This is the bag that converts people who think jerky is too salty and severe. Good on a long flight, good over a controller on a Friday night, and the obvious pick for anyone who usually buys the sweet sticky stuff and fancies eating something drier for once.

Frequently asked

  • Where does the sweetness come from? Erythritol, a sweetener, in place of sugar. That is how the bag gets its teriyaki sweetness with no sugar in the marinade.
  • Is it sticky? Not at all. The teriyaki character lives in the marinade, not in a coating.
  • How does it compare with Lemon Ginger? They share the ginger and lemongrass accent. Teriyaki is savoury-sweet and deeper; Lemon Ginger is brighter and drier.
