Grizzly Foods Vegan Jerky Burn Baby Burn — plant-based, properly hot

Grizzly Foods Vegan Jerky Burn Baby Burn is a soy-based jerky with chilli and habanero, dried and briefly smoked over beech wood. It is the hot one of the three meat-free bags in the Grizzly range, and it does not treat the heat as a garnish.

Why this one

  • Habanero and chilli: the fire is the point, and it turns up with paprika depth behind it.
  • Something to stand on: the brewed marinade gives the heat a savoury base instead of leaving it hanging in mid-air.
  • Protein and fibre from plants: it fills you up, not just heats you up.
  • European plant protein: grown in Europe, which shortens the journey considerably.

How Grizzly Foods makes it

Soy pieces go into a traditionally brewed marinade, then take on paprika, chilli and habanero before being dried and passed briefly over beech wood smoke. Grizzly Foods works with natural ingredients throughout, which is why the heat tastes of chilli rather than of something added at the end out of a bottle.

Taste and texture: paprika and smoke land first, then the chilli climbs steadily, and the habanero finishes the job somewhere around the back of the throat. The pieces are dense and chewy rather than crisp, so the burn accumulates at whatever speed you eat, and the savoury base underneath stops it turning into pure punishment.

When to reach for it

Festival weekends and long train rides, when you want something in a backpack that survives being sat on and still has a personality. It is also the answer for spice hunters who have gone meat-free and assumed that was the end of anything interesting.

Frequently asked

  • Is it as hot as the beef version? In the same league. The chilli and habanero are doing the same job here; only the base underneath has changed.
  • Is it crisp or chewy? Chewy. It behaves like jerky in the mouth, which is the entire point of it.
  • Is there a milder meat-free option? Yes — the Vegan Jerky Cracked Pepper is savoury and peppery with no chilli in it at all.
