KJØ Teriyaki & Garlic Beef Jerky — Danish beef with a Japanese accent
KJØ Teriyaki & Garlic Beef Jerky is Danish beef jerky marinated in teriyaki and garlic, smoked and dried into soft strips. It is the sweet-savoury one in the KJØ line-up: high in protein, sticky where the Spicy bags are smoky, and the most likely of the four to disappear before you get home. Sold in a 60 g bag or a case of ten.
Why this one
- Teriyaki done properly: soy-driven and savoury first, sweet second, so it tastes like a glaze rather than like a sweet.
- Garlic you can actually find: it sits right behind the soy instead of hiding under it, unlike every generic teriyaki jerky.
- A-grade Danish beef: KJØ builds the whole range on it, and the meat quality is what lets a sweet marinade work without turning sickly.
How KJØ makes it
KJØ is a Danish jerky maker working with locally sourced, A-grade Danish beef. The meat is salted and smoked, then marinated with soy, ginger and garlic before drying, which is where the teriyaki character comes from. KJØ also leaves nitrites out of the process — the cure does its work without them.
Taste and texture: sweet-salty and faintly gingery up front, garlic through the middle, and a gentle smoke underneath that stops it tipping into candy. The strips are soft and pliable rather than brittle, with enough chew to slow you down. Against the rest of the range this is the crowd-pleaser — Tasty is the balanced smoky one, Spicy brings BBQ heat, Goddamn Spicy goes further still.
When to reach for it
Road trips and train journeys, where the smell of garlic makes you either very popular or very unpopular in your carriage. It is also the bag to open on someone who says they do not like jerky, because sweet and garlicky is an easier sell than smoked and peppery. Undecided? The KJØ Mixed Pack settles the argument with all four.
Frequently asked
- Is it spicy? No. This is the sweet-savoury corner of the KJØ range. For heat, the Spicy and Goddamn Spicy bags are the ones you want.
- How chewy is it? Soft and flexible rather than tough. The strips tear easily and do not fight back.
- What do I do once the bag is open? Reseal it, keep it cool and dry and eat it within a few days. Sealed, it keeps at room temperature.
