Chokay Treat Milk Salty Liquorice – salmiak-dusted almonds in milk chocolate
Chokay Treat Milk Salty Liquorice is a 110 g bag of whole almonds coated in Chokay milk chocolate and dusted with salty liquorice, made without added sugar. If you grew up on salmiak you already know how this goes. If you did not, it is the friendliest introduction available: the milk chocolate softens the salt, the almond gives you something to bite, and the liquorice turns up at the end.
Why this bag empties faster than planned
- Three layers in every piece: a roasted almond in the middle, milk chocolate around it, salty liquorice powder on the outside. Each piece lands in that order.
- Almond-heavy: there is a serious amount of nut in this bag, which is why it eats more like a nut snack than a sweet.
- Nordic salmiak, not sweet liquorice: the dusting is the salty style, so the edge is genuine rather than a sugary liquorice flavour.
How Chokay builds it
Chokay is a Dutch brand from Breda working with premium Belgian chocolate and freshly roasted nuts. The milk chocolate here is made without added sugar, with cocoa solids at a minimum of 38%, and the liquorice goes on as a fine dusting once the chocolate has set.
Taste: creamy milk chocolate arrives first, then the salt, then that unmistakable liquorice tang sitting at the back of the tongue.
Texture: a fine powdery coating, a smooth chocolate shell and a hard almond crunch underneath it all.
When to reach for it
The sharing bowl: tip the bag out at a film night and watch the Nordic contingent quietly relocate to that end of the sofa.
Alongside coffee: two or three pieces with something strong and black. The salt does something very good indeed.
A present for the salmiak obsessive: everybody knows one, and they are notoriously hard to buy chocolate for.

Is it vegan? No. The coating is milk chocolate, which puts this one in the vegetarian column rather than the vegan one.
How salty is it? Less than you would guess. The salty hit sits on the outside in the dusting rather than running through the chocolate.
How should I store it? Cool and dry. Warmth softens the shell and the powder starts to clump, which is a shame rather than a disaster.
