QINA Ostrich Snapstick Biltong - one solid stick, no crumbs
QINA Ostrich Snapstick Biltong takes the same dark, lean ostrich as the sliced bag and dries it as a stick instead. Biltong in stick form is a different eating experience altogether: denser, slower and more substantial, with a chew that lasts long enough to count as an event rather than a handful.
Why the stick
Dense by design: a snapstick is pressed and dried as one piece, so it holds together and gives you something to work at instead of falling apart in strips.
Pocket-shaped: a 30 g stick disappears into a jacket, a glovebox or a gym bag and comes out intact after you have sat on it.
One-handed: no bag to hold open, no fingers going in and out, nothing greasy landing on a steering wheel or a phone.
Biltong, not jerky
The difference is the method. Jerky meets heat; biltong never does. The cure comes first, vinegar and spice, and the drying follows: slow, in cool air, with no smoke and no heat blast. Just time, which is why biltong tastes of the meat and the cure rather than of a marinade, and why the texture lands meaty instead of brittle.
Taste and texture
Rich and savoury with the clean finish ostrich is known for, concentrated further by drying one thick piece rather than thin slices. The stick is firm the whole way through and takes proper chewing, so the flavour builds instead of arriving all at once. Within the QINA range it has more character than the beef while staying friendlier than blesbok.
When to reach for it
The commute, the gym bag, the last hour of a walk, and the point in a meeting where lunch is clearly not happening. It also suits anyone who eats snacks far too quickly and would like something protein-dense to last more than ninety seconds.
Frequently asked
What is a snapstick? A single stick of biltong, pressed and dried as one piece rather than sliced, which is where the denser chew comes from.
Sliced or snapstick, what actually changes? Only the format and the bite. Slices are thin and quick, the stick is dense and slow, and the meat and cure are the same.
Does the stick need a fridge? No. Sealed, it is shelf-stable at room temperature; an opened one should be kept dry and eaten soon.
