5 Reasons Your Customers Are Asking for Beef Jerky

The ask is real

If you work in food retail, you've probably heard it: "Do you have beef jerky?" It might have been once a month a couple of years ago. Now it's once a week. Maybe more. Here's what's driving that demand, and why it's not going away.

1. The protein obsession is mainstream

High-protein diets have gone from niche bodybuilder territory to completely mainstream. Regular people - office workers, parents, students - actively look for high-protein options now. Beef jerky delivers 50-70g of protein per 100g, which puts it in a league of its own among snacks. No other grab-and-go snack comes close.

2. Clean ingredient lists win

Consumers are reading labels more than ever. Jerky and biltong, at their best, have remarkably short ingredient lists: meat, salt, spices. Compare that to the average protein bar (20+ ingredients, most of them unpronounceable) and you can see why the clean-eating crowd loves dried meat snacks.

3. The keto and low-carb wave

Keto, paleo, carnivore, low-carb - whatever you call it, a significant chunk of consumers are actively cutting carbohydrates. Jerky is one of the few convenient snacks that fits perfectly into these diets. Many varieties have under 5g of carbs per serving. For this audience, finding jerky in a shop is like finding an oasis in a desert of sugary snacks.

4. Outdoor and fitness culture is booming

Hiking, trail running, climbing, gym culture - all growing rapidly across Europe. And all of these activities create demand for portable, protein-rich, shelf-stable snacks. Jerky is the original adventure food. It's lightweight, doesn't melt, doesn't need refrigeration, and provides sustained energy. Outdoor and sports retailers who stock jerky see consistent sales.

5. American food culture influence

Let's not underestimate the cultural factor. American food trends have massive influence in Europe, especially among younger consumers. Beef jerky is an icon of American snack culture, and social media, travel, and streaming content have made it aspirational. The market is catching up to the demand.

What this means for your shop

If customers are asking for jerky and you don't stock it, you're leaving money on the table and sending them to a competitor (or worse, to Amazon). The category has strong margins, loyal repeat customers, and growing demand. And getting started is easy.
