Sunshine Delights Dippies Dark Chocolate Dates and Cashew are soft pitted dates filled with a cashew and half-dipped in dark Peruvian chocolate, in a 100 g bag from Sunshine Delights, the Hamburg dried fruit brand. It is the richest thing in the range and the closest a dried fruit snack gets to a proper praline.
Why this one
Three textures: sticky date, crunchy cashew, snapping chocolate.
High in fibre and low in salt: dessert-like, but built on fruit and nuts.
Sweetness from the date itself: the fruit does the work and the chocolate adds the bitter edge.
How it is made
Soft dates are stoned and filled with a whole cashew nut, then dipped partway into melted dark chocolate made with Peruvian cocoa and left to set. Every care is taken to remove the stones, but a fragment can occasionally remain. Because of the whole nuts, this one is not suitable for small children. Store at room temperature, out of direct sun.
Taste and texture
Caramel from the date, buttery crunch from the cashew, bitterness from the chocolate. It is denser and more indulgent than the Dippies Mango or Pineapple, which are fruit-forward and tangy; this one is the one you reach for with coffee.
