Sea Snacks Dried Mussels — small, dense and full of the sea

Dried mussels are the shellfish outlier in the Sea Snacks range: no fillet, no strip, just whole mussel meat salted and dried down into chewy little nuggets. Sea Snacks takes Mytilus chilensis from farms along the Chilean coast, salts the meat and dries it down into a 30 g pouch you eat by the piece. What comes out is a protein-dense snack carrying the most concentrated flavour in the whole range.

Why this one

  • Not a fillet strip: the only product in the range you eat by the piece rather than by the strip, with a completely different bite.
  • Farmed, traceable shellfish: Mytilus chilensis, grown on the Chilean coast rather than dredged.
  • Concentrated flavour: drying takes the water out of a mussel and leaves everything that makes it taste like one.
  • High in protein: mussel meat, sea salt and time.

How Sea Snacks makes it

The mussels are grown in Chilean coastal waters, shucked, cleaned, salted and dried. Shells never make it into the pouch, so there is no picking or prising involved — you open the pack and eat. The protective-atmosphere seal is there to stop the nuggets softening in transit.

Taste and texture

Dense and springy, with a chew that gives way rather than fights back, and a briny sweetness that turns up all at once. It is closer to a dried scallop than to anything else in the range, and it is unapologetically shellfish — nobody will eat one by accident and wonder what it was. Two or three is a proper mouthful.

Who it is for

People who order moules the moment they see them on a menu. Snack boards that already have cheese and need something from the sea. Cooks, too: drop a handful into a paella or a broth a few minutes before serving and they soften into the dish.

Frequently asked

Are there shells in the pack? No. It is mussel meat only, already shucked, so the pouch is all edible.

Are they chewy? Yes, and pleasantly so. Think dense and springy rather than tough — a slower eat than the crisp fish strips, and a much bigger flavour per piece.

Can I cook with them? They work best added late to something wet — a paella, a broth, a bowl of noodles — where they rehydrate a little and give the liquid a serious lift.
