Sea Snacks Dried Atlantic Cod Fillet Strips — brittle, clean and very old-fashioned
Dried Atlantic cod fillet strips are the plainest product Sea Snacks dries, and the hardest to improve on. Cod (Gadus morhua) is trawled in the Northeast Atlantic, the fillets are salted and dried, and that is the end of the process. Each 30 g sachet holds a lean, protein-dense snack that behaves like a savoury crisp made entirely of fish.
Why this one
- The leanest strip on the shelf: cod is about as lean as white fish gets, and drying does not change that.
- A method with history: salting and drying cod is the oldest way there is of keeping an Atlantic catch, and it still works.
- Named fish, named ocean: Gadus morhua, trawl-caught in the Northeast Atlantic.
- Nothing loud in it: no smoke, no sweetener, no spice rack — so what you taste is cod.
How Sea Snacks makes it
Fillets are salted and dried, with no sweetening step and nothing added at the end. It is an unglamorous process producing an unglamorous strip, which is the point: this is the flavour Atlantic ports built their winters around, in a bag you can open at a desk.
Taste and texture
These shatter. Cod dries into thin, brittle strips that break apart on the first bite rather than chewing, and the flavour lands immediately: clean, mildly salty, with the savoury backbone of a good stock. Where the salmon and squid keep you busy, cod is over quickly and makes you reach for another one. That is either a feature or a warning, depending on your self-control.
Who it is for
Anyone curious about dried seafood who wants the least intimidating possible start. Cabins and camping trips where a stove is the only kitchen and a handful of cod can turn a pot of soup into an actual dinner. Also for the household that already keeps a bag of it in the car door.
Frequently asked
Do I need to soak it first? No. It is made to be eaten dry, straight from the sachet. Soaking is optional and only worth doing if you are putting it into a soup.
Why does it break instead of chew? Cod flesh is flaky and lean, so there is nothing left holding a chew together once the water is gone.
What do I do with the crumbs at the bottom? Tip them over pasta, rice or a bowl of soup. They dissolve into savoury depth and nobody has to know the pack ended undignified.
