Indiana Salami Original: an 18 g snack stick that behaves like charcuterie
Indiana Salami Original is a dried pork-and-bacon sausage snack in a single 18 g stick. It sits apart from the rest of the Indiana range because it is not dried meat in strips at all: it is a proper little salami, softer and richer than jerky, and the only thing here you could plausibly serve on a plate.
Why this one
- Soft, not chewy: nothing to fight, which makes it the easy pick when you want flavour without the workout.
- One stick, one decision: no bag to reseal, no portioning, no evidence left behind.
- Room temperature forever: it sits in a drawer, a rucksack or a car door until you want it.
- Buy one or buy twenty: the twenty-stick box exists because nobody has ever bought exactly one.
How Indiana makes it
Pork and bacon are cured together, seasoned, smoked and dried down into a single firm stick, then wrapped and sealed under a protective atmosphere. That is the whole reason a snack salami works: no cooling needed, and a best-before date on the front of the pack rather than a countdown starting the moment you get it home. The light whitish bloom that sometimes appears on the surface is salt crystallising out of the cure, and it is fine to eat.
Taste and texture
Mellow and properly meaty, with the bacon leaving a smoky trail that stays in the mouth after the stick has gone. There is fat in it and you can taste it, the good way dry sausage is supposed to be. The bite is yielding rather than dense, closer to deli salami than to anything dried into a strip. Next to the Jalapeno version it is calmer and rounder, with no chilli in the way of the cured pork.
Who it is for
Train journeys where the buffet car is a rumour. Hotel rooms at nine in the evening. Picnic baskets, festival pockets and the glove compartment of anyone who drives long distances and distrusts service stations. Also the one to pick for a food parcel, because it will survive the post.
Frequently asked
What meat is in it? Pork and bacon, cured and dried in the dry-sausage style rather than sliced and dried like Indiana's jerky.
Does it need a fridge? No, and it does not need eating in a hurry either. Check the best-before printed on the front of the pack and store it somewhere cool and dry.
How does it compare with the Salami Jalapeno? Same base, same soft bite. Original leaves the chilli out, so the cured pork and the smoke do all the talking.
